Division policies adjusted to align with School Act

June 27th, 2018

In response to the recent changes to the School Act regarding a board’s responsibility to provide its students and staff with a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment, PHPS  reviewed the related Policies and Administrative Procedures (APs). Our board believes that all students and staff should be able to work and learn in a welcoming, caring, respectful, and safe environment and we are confident that we continue to meet legislated expectations.

We are proud to say that only minor adjustments needed to be made to our policy on Welcoming, Caring, Respectful, and Safe Environments.

  • Our Policy affirms the rights described in the Alberta Human Rights Act and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
  • It also declares that students and staff will not be discriminated against as described in the Alberta Human Rights Act or the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms

We also updated references to the School Act in our Student Code of Conduct AP.  This document serves as a guide and sometimes as a teaching resource to help students understand their responsibilities as participants in a welcoming, caring, respectful, and safe learning environment.

Our APs relating to Inclusive Practices and  Student Activities and Organizations have also been fine-tuned to align with recent amendments to the School Act.

All Policies, Administrative Procedures and Forms are available on the Pembina Hills Public Schools website. Inquiries related to PHPS policies or administrative procedures should be directed to Assistant Superintendent of Education Services Mark Thiesen.
