2022-2023 school year calendar approved

December 9th, 2021

At their December 8th regular meeting, the school board approved the 2022-2023 Pembina HIlls School Year Calendar. All schools will continue to meet the required hours of instruction:

  • 960 hours for Grades 1-9
  • 1000 hours in Grades 10-12

Due to differing day lengths at schools, and the interconnections associated with student transportation, some schools will meet or exceed these requirements in fewer days than others. Schools will work with their school councils over the next several weeks to integrate the needs of their school into calendars built upon the foundation of the division’s base calendar.

What’s new for 2022-2023?

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th has been adopted as a ‘stat’ holiday in Pembina Hills in 2022. During the week leading up to September 30th, schools will engage students in activities to honor the survivors of the residential school system, their families, and communities.

A ‘staggered entry’ which was first introduced in 2020-2021, will be optional for schools in 2022-2023. The staggered entry dates are August 29th and 30th. Some schools may take the opportunity to focus on orienting students who are transitioning to a new school or into junior or senior high. Others may choose to start all students on the second of the two dates. Watch for your school calendars to be developed over the following 6-8 weeks.

Four ‘alternate operational days’ have been set for the schools who can take advantage of them, depending on the instructional hours available at their sites. These non-student days provide opportunities for teachers to collaborate with peers from other schools. Having these days available will be especially valuable for K-6 teachers who will be implementing a new and revised curriculum in the fall of 2022. Refer to your child’s school calendar to see if these dates will be applied in your school. The alternate operational days for schools to consider in 2022-2023 are:

  • October 28th
  • November 18th
  • January 27th
  • April 28th

Which dates are consistent for all schools in 2022-2023?
