Citizenship Award Winner—Chance Foster

February 8th, 2022

Chance Foster is a Grade 12 student at R. F. Staples Secondary School. He was nominated for the Citizenship Award by teacher Lalenya Gasse and friend and neighbour Carol Anne McCann.

Chance demonstrates responsibility and has shown himself to be a responsible member of his school. While working in classroom groups, Chance is often the one keeping the group on task and ensuring the tasks are complete. Chance has shown how he works towards his goals, by achieving early acceptance at MacEwan with the plan to get two degrees and work internationally as a Science teacher.

Chance is often the first to help or support others when it is needed, whether it be his peers or staff. It is not uncommon to hear Chance ask, “How can I help?” when he sees someone in need. Although the last two years have been a challenge, Chance has a positive attitude and takes everything in stride. Even when faced with a less than desirable mark on an assessment he sees it as an opportunity to learn.

Always taking the opportunity to think of how he can make others smile, Chance displays kindness and shows concern for others. He often stops in to check on his teachers, sometimes even showing up with coffee in hand.

Despite constant transitions to in-school and at-home learning last year, Chance showed that he is dependable, always showing up for class whether it’s on Google Meet or in person. He gets his work done, engages in discussion and even helps out a sub teacher when needed. Chance has the courage to do what is right, putting his responsibilities and school first. His friends sometimes refer to him as “Dad” because he is the one to lead them to put their goals and achievements first.

Chance respects others and is a friend to all. Although he may not necessarily agree with them on certain things, he will always seek to find common ground. Chance listens to others but will question something that might not make sense to him, and will respectfully discuss the topic. He is described as honest and respectful. He will never just tell someone what they want to hear; he would rather say nothing than lie.

The school board is pleased to present Chance with the Citizenship Award for recognition of the positive contributions he makes in his school and community. Congratulations!
