Citizenship Award Winner—Charlie Brendzan

December 15th, 2021

Charlie is a Grade 9 student at Barrhead Composite High School. She was nominated for the Citizenship Award by bus driver Mel Tonsi.

On November 2, 2021 Charlie was riding the bus to school when it was struck by a log from a turning logging truck. The log entered the bus through the window across the aisle from Charlie’s seat and swung overhead, narrowly missing the students. She reached across to pull a fellow student out of harm’s way and into her own seat. She shielded the student as the log continued to move around inside the bus before partially exiting out the window. Charlie showed that she has the incredible courage to do what is right, putting the physical safety of others before herself.

During the incident, Charlie continued to demonstrate maturity beyond her years as she helped the younger children leave the bus and ensured that they stayed safely in a group while waiting for emergency responders. Charlie’s actions clearly demonstrate how she helps and supports others. She remained calm throughout the incident, knowing that the younger children were looking towards the older teens for safety and protection.

Charlie also shows concern for others, which was especially evident in the days following the accident. She brought items on the bus for the kids to help keep deal with the stress from the incident and keep them calm. She quietly and discreetly passed out items like stress balls to all the kids. She acted as an advocate and kept an eye on those kids that were struggling in the early days following the incident.

The school board is pleased to present Charlie with the Citizenship Award for recognition of the positive contributions she makes in her school and community. Congratulations!
