We are experiencing a critical shortage of bus drivers across our school division. We’ve done our best to avoid route cancellations, but we simply don’t have enough spare drivers to support all our routes.

Why the shortage?
We have recently recruited new drivers, and although they are cleared and ready to begin training, they need to obtain their Class 2 License. This is where we are experiencing delays—with limited access to local examiners. To alleviate the issue we are sending more drivers to larger centres with longer wait times.

Bus driver shortages are not unique to Pembina Hills. This is a province-wide issue that affects many school divisions.

What are we doing about it?
We will do our best to get drivers tested and trained as soon as possible. In the meantime, we will continue to use all licensed and trained staff (mechanics, directors, etc.) to cover routes as needed. The negative long-term impact of this means that we will see delays with bus repairs, maintenance, and limited availability of spare buses.

What does this mean for families?
Although we are doing everything in our power to keep buses on the road, there is a possibility that bus service for your child may be interrupted. You may experience slight delays in pick-up and drop-off times, especially when spare drivers are required to drive a route on short notice. They may not have much time to become familiar with the route, and we ask for your patience.

We may need to cancel routes temporarily if no drivers are available. If this occurs, parents will be notified as soon as possible. We understand the inconvenience this may cause for families, and we appreciate your patience as we work to recruit, train and license new drivers.
