School bus “fly-bys” still a problem, Pembina Hills pilots use of stop sign arm extensions

October 19th, 2022

It is illegal and dangerous to pass a school bus when the red lights are flashing. However, these “fly-bys” continue to be a problem for school buses in the division.

This year, the division is piloting the use of stop sign arm extensions on school buses aimed directly at reducing, if not eliminating, fly-by incidents. An unfortunate, but necessary, step to increase the visibility of school bus stop signs and keep students safe.

There are currently two school buses that have the extension installed and in use, and a third extension will be arriving soon for use throughout the division. The response from bus drivers utilizing these extensions has been positive. The division will continue to implement the use of the arm extensions as routes of concern are identified.

In September 2022, there were nine reported fly-bys, up from 8 in 2021.

Be aware, know the laws!
