Schools transfer $50,000 in nutrition funds to community organizations

April 9th, 2020

For the past few years, Alberta Education has provided the Nutrition Grant to Alberta school divisions. Pembina Hills distributed the allocation to our schools, and each school has developed programs that meet the needs of their students and community in accordance with the conditions described by the ministry.

Since in-school classes were cancelled in March, the distribution of meals to students has also stopped. Pembina Hills has connected with community organizations in Swan Hills, Barrhead, and Westlock to establish a way to ensure the nutritional needs of students can continue to be addressed.

We are happy to announce that we will be transferring almost $50,000 in funds remaining from the Nutrition Grant proportionally to the Swan Hills Food Bank, the Barrhead Food Bank, and the Westlock FCSS who will use the funds as an extension of their Caring for Kids and Families program. These organizations also support the small rural communities near Westlock and Barrhead.

We will be completing the transfer to these organizations as soon as possible. We are thankful that they are able to assess and respond to the needs of the children and families in our communities.
