April 16th, 2025

Pembina Hills is pleased to announce Taryn Meunier as its nominee for the Edwin Parr Teacher Award! This award is presented annually by the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) to six outstanding first-year teachers from across the province. Taryn currently teaches grade 8/9 Mathematics and Health at Barrhead Composite High School.

Taryn has immediately established herself as a caring and effective educator. She cultivates a respectful and empathetic classroom, fostering a strong sense of belonging and celebrating diversity. This supportive environment has contributed to significant student growth, particularly in mathematics.

Taryn’s commitment extends beyond academics. She actively builds positive relationships throughout the school by volunteering and coaching, connecting with students and families in meaningful ways.

As a reflective and collaborative professional, Taryn actively seeks opportunities for growth. She engages with colleagues, values feedback, and continuously refines her well-structured lessons. These lessons are characterized by clear learning goals, real-world relevance, and diverse assessment strategies that cater to individual student needs. Furthermore, Taryn thoughtfully integrates diversity and Indigenous perspectives into her teaching.

“Taryn works hard to create the best program for her students, seeking opportunities to expand her knowledge and practice, collaborating with colleagues, and connecting with students in and outside of the classroom.” ~ Slade Sekulich, BCHS Principal

Underpinning her practice is a strong understanding of professional responsibilities. Taryn diligently adheres to relevant legislation and school policies. Her dedication, positive impact, and commitment to her students make Taryn Meunier a truly deserving nominee for the Edwin Parr Award.

A recognition event celebrating all nominees will be held in May where the winner will be announced.

This award is named after Edwin Parr, who served as the Board Chair of the Athabasca School Division and as the president of the Alberta School Trustees’ Association (now called the Alberta School Boards Association) from 1956 until 1962. When he passed away in 1963, the ASBA established an annual award in his honour the following year.
