Students exceed reading challenge – Principal Ouimet kisses a goat!
Teachers and principals are so passionate about reading, they’ll agree to almost anything to get their students excited about reading. March 2019 was reading month at WES. In addition to daily fun reading events–from Karaoke to Dr. Seuss Day to reading in the dark with flashlights–students were challenged to read 6,000 minutes throughout the month. If they met the challenge, Principal Pierre Ouimet promised to kiss a goat. Not only did the students meet the challenge, they exceeded it, reading in excess of 6,200 minutes!
Board prepares for ASBA Spring General Assembly
In preparation for the June 3rd Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) Spring General Meeting, the school board reviewed the association’s proposed budget for 2019-2020 and proposed by-law amendments.
The ASBA is the only association that represents all 61 locally-elected public, separate and francophone school boards in Alberta. As a strong, supportive, province-wide association, the ASBA brings the different voices of Alberta’s school boards together, and advocates on behalf of its membership.
As part of the spring assembly, the ASBA and Headstrong, an initiative by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, are co-leading the Provincial Youth Mental Health Summit. The first event of its kind in Canada will see up to 180 student leaders in grades 9 to 11 from across Alberta gather together to listen, learn and collaborate to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. Three Pembina Hills students, who attend Vista Virtual School, will be part of the summit.
Drayden McCallum nominated for provincial award
The school board recognized R. F. Staples Grade 10 student Drayden McCallum for his nomination for the ASBA Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award. First Nations, Métis and Inuit Liaison Audrey Degner nominated Drayden for the award, and attended the meeting to tell the board how honoured she was to be part of Drayden’s learning journey. Drayden reported that he discovered the value and importance of his education during his junior high years. Congratulations Drayden!
