Fort Assiniboine School –

Fort Assiniboine School — a safe and caring family atmosphere

Principal Lorna Hiemstra and School Council Chair Penny Price reported on the many opportunities available to the school’s 83 Kindergarten to Grade 12 students. From the great team of people who care about students, to strong community support, the school focused on the priorities of mental health, literacy and numeracy this year.

Junior High students have a wide array of Career and Technology Foundations options, including cosmetology, soldering, sports performance and genius hour.

Granddaughter of former pioneer teacher meets with the board

Brenda Harris-Baron, granddaughter of John Richards (J.R.) Harris provided the board, for their archives, a biography of her grandfather. The collection includes photographs and newspaper clippings associated with the construction and dedication of the former J.R. Harris Junior High School. It was the first stand-alone junior high school in the Barrhead area, opening in 1960.

Harris taught for 50 years at Craven School — a one-room school in Mosside, located southwest of Barrhead — from 1913 to 1963.

Board revises priorities for 2019-22

After considering the results of the 2019 Pembina Hills Satisfaction Survey, the board revised the priority statements, placing greater emphasis on the importance of student-teacher relationships. The priorities for next year are:

  • Student-Teacher Relationships — Positive relationships between students and teachers are the foundation upon which we build students’ resilience, confidence and mental well-being.
  • Literacy and Numeracy — Literacy and numeracy are critical for student achievement in all areas of the curriculum.
  • Support for Staff — Teaching a diverse student population through purposeful inclusion and strategic implementation of effective practices, requires a collaborative and effective staff.
