Citizenship Award Winner – Emily Beattie

June 11th, 2026

The school board is pleased to present the Citizenship Award to Emily Beattie, a Grade 8 student at R.F. Staples Secondary School, in recognition of the positive contributions she makes to her school and community.

We often mistake leadership for being the loudest voice in the room or the person standing at the front of the crowd, but the most impactful leadership usually happens when the cameras are off.  It lives in the hallways, in the back of the classroom, and in those quiet, split-second choices that define a person’s true character.  This year’s Citizenship Award recognizes a student who has spent her Grade 12 year proving that integrity isn’t just a concept – it is a way of life.

Throughout the year, we have watched Emily navigate the social pressures of senior year with a rare kind of steady grace.  We’ve seen her face those awkward high school moments – the ones where it’s easier to stay silent or go along with the crowd – and instead, choose to stand up for what is fair.  It takes a specific kind of bravery to be the one who says, “Let’s do this the right way,” or to encourage others to follow expectations when it isn’t the “cool” thing to do.  For Emily, doing the right thing isn’t a performance; it’s just her baseline.

Beyond her courage, there is a consistent, quiet warmth she brings to our school.  Emily is the person who listens first and speaks second, making sure every voice in a group project feels valued.  She is the one who notices the “invisible” moments, like when a classmate is having a rough day or sitting alone, and steps in with a kind word or an invitation to join the circle.  She treats everyone – from her teachers to the newest student in the hall – with the exact same level of genuine respect and courtesy.

Our school is a better, kinder place because Emily decided to be a part of it.  She doesn’t just follow the community; she strengthens it.  Her empathy has been a glue for this graduating class, and her maturity has set a bar that we hope future students will strive to reach.  It is our absolute honor to present this Citizenship Award to someone who leads with her heart and stands firm in her principles.

Congratulations Emily!
