Beyond his role as a physical education and health teacher, Mr. Hicks has emerged as a tireless advocate for student well-being. Recognizing the detrimental impact of the pandemic on youth mental health, he proactively increased enrollment in physical education classes, emphasizing the vital connection between physical activity and mental resilience. His unwavering commitment to fostering a healthy and active student body has led to a significant surge in participation rates, particularly in basketball, where he has nearly tripled the number of students involved.
Mr. Hicks’ influence extends far beyond the classroom. He has transformed the basketball program, elevating it to new heights. Under his guidance, the RFS senior girls’ team achieved a remarkable feat by qualifying for provincials for the first time in over 50 years. His dedication to coaching and mentorship has inspired countless young athletes and his passion for the sport is evident in every practice, game and tournament.
Beyond his athletic endeavours, Mr. Hicks has created a safe and supportive environment for students. His office has become a sanctuary where students can seek guidance, share their concerns and simply be themselves. His ability to connect with students on a personal level is unparalleled, making him a trusted confidant and mentor.
Mr. Hicks’ commitment to lifelong learning is equally inspiring. He constantly seeks out new ways to enhance his teaching practices, attending professional development workshops and collaborating with other educators.
