The dedication and talent of students in Pembina Hills were on full display at the recent provincial skills competition on May 7-8, 2025 at the Edmonton EXPO Centre, with students from R.F. Staples Secondary School (RFS) in Westlock and Barrhead Composite High School (BCHS) competing. RFS sent a strong contingent of eight competitors, while BCHS was well-represented by three talented individuals.
Among the standout achievements, Grade 10 student Karley Regimbald from RFS captured the spotlight, earning a remarkable Gold Medal in the Intermediate Hairstyling competition. Her challenge involved the skillful replication of a bridal hairstyle from a photograph revealed on the day of the event. This gold medal represents the pinnacle of achievement at this level, showcasing Karley’s exceptional talent and dedication.
Fellow RFS student, Grade 12 Angelina Labouxciere, also demonstrated impressive skill and perseverance in the highly demanding Senior Hairstyling category. Over two intense days, Angela tackled four distinct tests: a chemical texture with haircut, an elegant special occasion updo, a precise women’s cut and colour, and a detailed men’s cut based on a replication photo. Her hard work culminated in a commendable 5th-place finish.

The commitment and effort of these students were lauded by their teachers. Jenicka Langford, RFS Cosmetology Teacher, shared her pride, stating,
“Both girls trained for many months, and I could not be more proud of their hard work and dedication!”
Kevin MacKenzie, RFS Carpentry Teacher, echoed this sentiment, adding,
“Everyone was true ambassadors of our school, worked hard, and represented R.F. Staples in a very professional manner.”
Further demonstrating the breadth of talent at RFS, Josef Pidsadowski earned a well-deserved Bronze Medal in the Carpentry competition. Congratulations also go to the following RFS students for their strong performances: Madison Kolotyluk (18th in Carpentry), Claire Irwin (13th in Photography), Thomas Perryman (16th in Photography), Kole Carnegie (8th in Automobile Technology), and Adam Moscaluk (9th in Automobile Technology).

“Both Adam and Kole had a fantastic showing at this year’s competition. The team earned the bulk of their points in the suspension, brakes, drivetrain, and engine mechanical stations. With their sights set on the podium next year, they’ll be focusing their training on the electrical and engine diagnostics stations. Adam climbed from 13th place last year to 9th, while Kole made an outstanding debut by finishing 8th in his first year. Both students will return next year for their Grade 12 season, ready to push for a top-three finish. RF Staples is incredibly proud of these two students, who earned their place among the top 10 high school mechanics in Alberta in the Automotive Service sector.” ~ Aaron Deas, RFS Mechanics Teacher

BCHS students also showcased their abilities with distinction. Riley Manz placed 12th in Automobile Technology, Mike Knol finished 13th in Automobile Technology, and Valeria Valdez Galaviz achieved an impressive 4th place in Workplace Safety.
“I am really proud of Mike and Ryley. They worked hard all year to compete. They are fine young men and they will do well in whatever they put their mind and effort into for their future. ” ~ Ryan Siemens, BCHS Mechanics Teacher
