June 13th, 2025

We are proud to recognize Barrhead Composite High School (BCHS) students Rayleigh Vazquez and Sasha, who received Honourable Mention certificates for the Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Students Awards from the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA)!

The ASBA Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Awards recognize First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students who model strength and commitment in their education, embracing their own gifts, strengths, and potential, who inspire their peers, teachers, education leaders and community members while celebrating the ways of their people. These students were nominated for the award by Pembina Hills Success Coach Kara Rinas.

Sasha is described as a dedicated Grade 12 student who embodies strength and commitment in her education. She approaches each day with purpose, consistently giving her best effort in everything she does, from classroom discussions to assisting with school events. Sasha is a reliable and active participant in our school community, always willing to step up and take on leadership roles, driven by a genuine desire to contribute. Her positive attitude and respectful interactions resonate throughout the school, and her engagement with the FNMI Liaison and Elder has deepened her cultural roots. Sasha actively encourages other Indigenous and Métis students to participate in cultural activities, fostering a sense of belonging and motivating her peers to take pride in their identity. She is a true beacon of positivity and community spirit.

Rayleigh Vazquez, a new student at her school, has shown incredible adaptability and a mindset focused on continuous improvement. Despite initial uncertainty, she embraced challenges with perseverance, setting goals to build her confidence and excel in her studies. Rayleigh worked hard to foster meaningful connections with both peers and staff, building trust and authentic relationships through her openness and kindness. She has also embraced a holistic approach to her well-being, prioritizing her mental, emotional, and spiritual health and seeking guidance to manage stress positively. With a clear vision of becoming an elementary teacher, Rayleigh is committed to her education and actively learning more about Métis culture, demonstrating her desire to honour her heritage and make a positive difference in the lives of young children.

Congratulations Sasha and Rayleigh, and we wish you all the best in your future!
