Citizenship Award Winner—Gustavo Vallecillo

June 18th, 2025

The school board is pleased to present a Pembina Hills Citizenship Award to Gustavo Vallecillo in recognition of his generosity of spirit, uplifting attitude, and the genuine care he brings to every interaction. Gustavo is a grade 9 student at R.F. Staples Secondary School (RFS). He was nominated for an award by teacher Jessica Stevens.

Gus is a natural encourager and team player. In physical education class, he can always be found supporting his classmates—whether he’s helping someone understand a new game, cheering from the sidelines, or simply partnering with someone who needs a little extra confidence. His willingness to lend a hand makes a real difference and helps create an environment where everyone feels welcome and capable.

What truly sets Gus apart is his kindness. He treats others with warmth, respect, and humour, making people feel at ease and seen. His contagious excitement, quick smile, and ability to keep everyone laughing bring joy to those around him. He goes out of his way to include others, making sure no one is left out or left behind.

Gus also leads with humility and understanding. He listens to others, values their input, and creates space for everyone to feel heard. If someone makes a mistake, he’s the first to lighten the moment with encouragement, often reminding them (and himself) that messing up is part of learning. His ability to laugh at himself while lifting others builds a sense of camaraderie that defines true sportsmanship.

Gus is a student who quietly transforms his surroundings through empathy, support, and joy. The school board is pleased to present Gus with a Citizenship Award in recognition of the positive contributions he makes in his school and community.

Congratulations Gus!
