Improving air quality in our schools

February 7th, 2022

Ventilation is one component of maintaining healthy environments, and is an important COVID-19 prevention strategy for schools. This week, Pembina Hills began installing new MERV-13 filters in the heating and ventilation systems in our schools. These filters are up to 90% efficient against respiratory droplets and are recommended by Alberta Health Services. These are the highest quality filters we can install in our systems. Installation is expected to be completed by February 11th and will cost the division approximately $48,000 which is three times the cost of our regular filters.

The division also explored the option of upgrading to HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters. We confirmed that this would require extensive engineering modifications to the mechanical systems and is not feasible at this time. The division is exploring the use of portable HEPA filtration systems in select lower ventilation classrooms. We will be testing the air quality and getting feedback from staff where they are used.

Facilities Director Tracy Tyreman says, “All air handling systems and furnaces are set up for 6 air exchanges per hour and use a combination of inside return air along with outside fresh air brought in directly through our filter systems, which removes harmful aerosol carrying viruses. They are programmed to run 24/7 in order to extract as many air contaminants as possible. For example, in colder temperatures (-40 C), the outside air volume is automatically set at 15% and the return air at 85%. In warmer temperatures (+30 C), the outside air is set at 100%.”

Other measures in schools

All enhanced health and safety measures which were implemented at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year are still in place. Examples include:

  • Plexiglass guards for front-end office staff
  • Hand sanitizer dispensers at all entrances
  • Additional disinfecting during lunch time for high touch surfaces throughout the day
  • Disinfecting foggers for use by caretakers in gyms and storage rooms at the end of the day
  • Natural non-toxic disinfectant for use in classrooms
  • Water bottle filling stations in all schools
  • Hands free taps and additional paper towel dispensers in student washrooms

Thank you to our school and custodial staff for your ongoing care and attention to these safety measures. Pembina Hills is committed to providing the best environment possible for our students and staff, and will continue to make recommended adjustments and improvements whenever possible.
