We weren’t quite sure what to expect in the competition as this was the first time for all of us to attend. Riley and Mike responded really well during the competition…they worked through all of the stations with the knowledge and skills that they had practiced…but using this experience will only help the guys to improve on the solid base that they have started with…the main focus for this year is to go and enjoy the competition and get a little bit better with these new experiences. ~ Ryan Siemens, BCHS Mechanics Teacher
From RFS, Charles Gardon and Adam Moscaluk competed in Automobile Technology taking 2nd and 4th respectively, Caitlin Beastallin competed in Baking, Madison Kolotyluk earned 1st and Josef Pisadowski 2nd in the Carpentry category, Gage Smith competed in Culinary Arts and Katrina Monro and Callista Hehn in Hair Junior. The Automobile Technology and Carpentry competitors who placed earned themselves a spot in the provincial competition in May. While there was no regional competition in Hairstyling Senior, Paige Tymkow is also heading to compete at provincials.
Aaron Deas, R.F. Staples Mechanics teacher, notes that the Automotive Technology regional competition at NAIT includes schools from Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Edmonton and St. Albert. The competition consists of six different timed stations where competitors are required to make precise measurements, identify vehicle parts, diagnose electrical faults and make adjustments and repairs on various vehicle components.
I am really proud of the boys putting together all of the knowledge and skills we have been working on in the shop. It’s one thing to put in all of the hours training, but to perform under pressure the way our boys do is really impressive! ~ Aaron Deas, R.F. Staples School Mechanics Teacher
